A demographic is a characteristic pertaining to a given portion of the human population. These characteristics are used to narrow down the parameters of a set of data.
Some common examples of demographics used to segregate our population are:
Gender
Age
Ethnicity
Education
Income
The image below is of 5 different individuals. It is amazing how many ways we can seperate them using demographics.
We could seperate them in a few different ways just using what we know:
There are 2 men and 3 women
There are 2 African-Americans, 2 Asians, and 1 Caucasian
We could continue to seperate them even more through what we infer:
There are 3 single people and 1 couple
There are 5 people who live in a Western society
There are 2 people in their 40s, 2 in their late 20s, and 1 person in her late teens or early 20s
If we knew more about these individuals, we could seperate them using demographics even further.
