Defining the Digital Divide

Exploring Globalizations Definition of The Digital Divide: The Digital Divide is the gap that separates people who do– and do not– have access to up-to-date digital technology.

Another Definition of the Digital Divide

According to dictionary.com, "digital divide" can be defined as "the division of the world into two camps, those who have access to the internet and other advanced information technologies and those who don't. The term highlights the issue that those who do not have access to such technology are potentially destined to futures where they will be at an economic disadvantage." The digital divide separates those people who have access to modern technology and those who do not.

The digital divide is a term used to describe the gap between people who have access to updated technology and others who do not, the closing of the digital divide refers to the increase in the spread of technology across the globe. One major technology is the Internet.

With the influence of globalization, access to technology is far easier than it has been in the past. Globalization is connecting the world more each day!

Here are some images describing the Digital Divide

This next picture is a picture of a pie graph that shows us the percentage of Internet users by region in the year 2000. This chart shows the digital divide within the continents involved in the chart.

The Image is fuzzy so i will describe to you its information: Red= Europe 28%
Yellow=Latin America 4.1% Blue=Asia/Pacific 25.9% Black= Africa 0.8%
Green= USA and Canada 41.3%

How i would explain the Digital Divide

This next image shows three people trying to build a bridge from one end of a valley to another. In a way this is a very symbolic example of the Digital Divide. We look at this cartoon wondering what it means and now after looking at it. Look below the cartoon to find how I would explain this cartoon and the term Digital Divide.

digital.jpg

On the left side(which symbolizes North America and more Technologically advanced countries) we see a man wearing a suit. On the Right side (which symbolizes the countries that aren’t as technologically advanced) we see two men wearing scrubby clothing. Now what I got out of this was that there was only one man symbolizing the more advanced countries working on the bridge and there were two men symbolizing the countries that aren’t as technologically advanced working on the bridge. So from what I understand is that the less technologically advanced countries want to fix the Global Divide faster than the more advanced countries. From what I have learned I will define the Digital Divide as the division between the more technologically advanced countries and the more less advanced countries.

This picture was taken in New Delhi in India. This shows the increase in access to the internet across the world. This access creates a wider spread knowledge across the globe. The graph next to it also shows an increase in Internet users across the World from 2000-2007.

The minister of Malta means that the internet is an important tool to spreading knowledge and data. The benefits of closing the digital divide are these increased knowledge.
