Ethnocentrism is a word that combines "ethnic" and centre". Its common definition is to believe that your culture or ethnic group is superior to all other races or cultures, or to view alien groups or cultures from your own biased perspective. This causes individuals or groups to judge other groups in how they relate to themselves. Some of the examples of how they relate themselves to other groups are language, behaviour, customs and religion. The belief that all cultures should be based upon European cultures is called eurocentrism.
An example of a group of people being ethnocentric is Hitler and Nazi Germany. The Nazi's believed that their race was superior to the Jews.
Ethnocentrism, as defined by dictionary.com is the the belief in the inherent superiority of one's ethnic group or culture. Ethnocentric people often judge what is different from them as bad or wrong or backward and often develop stereotypes against people who are not part of the same ethnic group or culture that they are a part of, this point is demonstrated perfectly by the 1940 American poll which asked people what they typically thought of people that lived in Central or South America where 80% of Americans voted that the term which best describes these people was brown skinned as opposed to terms such as intelligent, brave and generous.
This picture conveys the point that the US is ethnocentric against the rest of the world and that the rest of the world is in turn ethnocentric against the US.
