The United Nations Development Program created the Human Development Index as a way of measuring quality of life in UN member countries. It classifies countries as developed, developing, or undeveloped.
HDI calculations are based mainly based on longevity, knowledge, and standard of living. Longevity is measured by life expectancy, knowledge is measured by school enrollment and adult literacy, and standard of living is measured by GDP per person.
The reason for the creation of the HDI was to draw government, media, and NGOs attention towards indicators that go beyond GDP and reveal other information.
Kuwait, for example, has a high GDP but a very low level of education attainment. And Canada, which ranks high on the HDI, was criticized because of the differences between quality of life for the general population and for the Aboriginals.
Human Development Index (HDI) refers to the procedure of expanding the choices of people, supplying them with a greater amount of opportunities for education, health care, income, and employment.
Human Development Index is measured by...
Standard of living, indicated by Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) and Gross Domestic Product (GDP)
Life expectancy, represented as an indicator of health and longevity
Knowledge and Education, determined by net enrollment in primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions, and adult literacy rate
High income Upper-middle income Lower-middle income Low income
Blue- High incomeGreen- Upper-middle income Purple- Lower-middle income Red- Low income- This world map shows us levels of income which correlates to the amount of human development
