An organization or business established by groups of people to work toward specific goals and to gain public support in achieving these goals. NGOs depend on volunteers and donations, but they may also receive grants or contracts for the government. They may influence government policies at national and international levels. NGOs are private institutions that depend on the government. There are many types of NGOs:

BINGO stands for business-oriented international NGO
ENGO stands for environmental NGO
GONGOs are government-operated NGOs, which may have been set up by governments to look like NGOs in order to qualify for outside aid or promote the interests of the government in question
QUANGOs are quasi-autonomous non-governmental organisations
