Paternalism means paternal or mother figure who makes the Choices for the Children. The mother is considered to be more wise and smarter than the children. The children are usually mothered and told what to do. Most of the time the children are never acknowledged because they are considered insubordinate to the mother.
An example of this would be, if a mother country like Britain made all the decisions for the aboriginal people. The aboriginal people never were allowed to make their own choices without the intrusion of the British
According to the American Heritage Dictionary, paternalism is “a policy or practice of treating or governing people in a fatherly manner, especially by providing for their needs without giving them rights or responsibilities.” Oftentimes, a government feels obliged to control the people because they are less powerful.
An example of paternalism is Residential Schools. Aboriginal children were forcibly taken from their homes by the government. The government thought that they were doing what was best for the Aboriginals by making them adapt to the white people’s way of life and that the Aboriginals were growing up improperly in their own environment. The negative impact of paternalism is that is takes away human rights by not giving people to power to make their own decisions.
