Found along the equator, the world's rainforests are the most biologically diverse ecosystems on the planet. It is estimated over 5 million species of plant and animal are found in the rainforest; many rainforest species are yet to be discovered. Below is a video showing many of the animals found in the region.
Before they began to be logged, rainforests covered of 14% of the earth's surface, today they cover only 6%. It is estimated this last 6% will disappear in the next 40 years. One and a half acres of rainforest are cut down every second, which equates to a loss of over 50 000 species a year.
Today, many groups such as the Rainforest Alliance and the Rainforest Action Network (RAN) are working to protect these delicate ecosystems. Below is a video made by the Rainforest Alliance.
