Sweatshop is the name given to factories overseas that practice questionable labour techniques. This includes child labour, starvation wages, long hours and dangerous conditions. Advocates of sweatshops can say that factories provide cheap quality goods and create jobs and economy in countries with none. On the other hand, detractors say that goods produced in sweatshops are of lesser quality and that the price is not worth the cost in human rights. Below is a parody of a Nike advertisement made by sweatshop detractors. The effect of sweatshops are wide-ranging and are visible in everyday life. When Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James was asked to sign a petition/document condemning China for its human rights violation, he refused to sign, saying he did not have enough information the issue, when in fact he was sponsored by Nike a company with a long history of human rights violation in China.
